Mike Ganz, District Fire Chief
As our department's motto states: "Proudly serving the community since 1907," the Stanwood Fire Department is very proud of its department's history, the City of Stanwood, and the men and women that have served in its ranks for over a century. In April of 1906, the town of Stanwood had decided to install hydrants, water mains and pumps and purchase an alarm bell, hose cart and 1000 feet of hose. A year later, Mayor Andrew Klaeboe circulated a petition for volunteers to start a new fire department. In May the James Astel home was destroyed by fire, which nearly spread and threatened the whole town. However, there was not yet a group of trained firefighters ready to answer the alarm and use the new equipment. As a result of that fire, a "mass meeting" was held on May 27, 1907. After some discussion, plans were made, officers elected, and the Stanwood Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) was born. Today, we proudly serve a city population of 5,200 and have responded to 1,598 fire, EMS and rescue calls in 2006. We are now a paid fire department with one station that is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with 5 career firefighters and paramedics. The City of Stanwood has recently signed an interlocal agreement with Camano Island Fire and Rescue to manage its fire department and to provide advanced life support response and transport to the residents of Stanwood City. This went into effect January 1st, 2006, and both departments are now operating
